Ripped off by Big Blue
My crew had the fishing trip of a lifetime, until we got home. All of our fish were processed by Big Blue Fisheries. Turns out Big Blue kept all of our big fish and gave us bits and pieces of someone else's much smaller pieces. We ended up with tails for 6 more salmon than were caught, and 4 more halibut that were caught.
Am curious, has anyone else run across fraudulent activities by Big Blue? I've contacted a few other fisherman who had similar experiences. Warning - Do NOT let Big Blue process your fish. They will steal the choice ones to sell in their retail operations. |

Big Blue Questions
Yeah, we noticed the same thing. We caught many big salmon but could not find very many thick pieces.
In retrospect, it probably is not a good idea to use a processing company that sells salmon to the public as well. Perhaps too much conflict of interest. Salmonhunter ![]() |

Black Box?
I also find it convienient that they meet you at the airport with your catch sealed up so you cannot verifty it is your catch.
Next time, I'd go to the processor to confirm my catch. However, if you have to do that and don't trust the processors, might as well go fish somewhere else. |

I joined the site solely to respond to this thread.
I had a great fishing trip from June 3rd - June 7th, and caught more fish than I knew what to do with. Luckily Big Blue had a few ideas in mind; switch my large salmon for the 8 lb salmon they had laying around their warehouse, insist half of all fish caught are tail sections, refuse to offer any explanation for the size and weight discrepancy, and tell me to f*ck off when they are called on their lies. If I decide to return to Sitka and am offered the choice to work with Big Blue again, I would just as rather throw my fish to the eagles. Absolutely under no circumstance would I encourage anyone to use the scam artists know as Big Blue. It is encouraging to see I am not alone in this mess, perhaps a class action lawsuit? Big Blue only smokes its customers!!! |

Another Bad Experience from Big Blue Fisheries
We fished Sitka in 2006 and 2007. Had great trip in 2006, until we opened up our boxes and found we didn't catch a 52lb kind, it seemed that the captain got it wrong, it was actual 17 Pink Tails. We called the captain and he claimed ignorance. We called BB Fisheries, talked to some idiot named John, who claimed that we didn't catch any kings, just pinks.
In 2007, since we were burned in 2006, we told our new captain that we didn't want to use Big Blue. He said that as long as we only submitted halibut there wouldn't be a problem. Since we were just hali fishing we decided to give them antoher chance. We slammed 4 barn doors on the trip, avg weight 128 lbs. When we got home we had 87 tail sections (4 per fish, should have been 16) with the thickest piece .75 ". In 2008 we had another great trip, but this time we hired a local fisherman to process our fish. He did a great job and this year we actually got our fish. I strongly warn all fisherman going to Sitka to insist their captains do not use Big Blue. They are thieves. I checked the Better Business Bureau and there are several complaints filed against them. If any of you guys are serious about filing a class action lawsuit you can count me in. PhishPhreak |
